Frances Malpas Obituary

Frances C. Malpas, 92, of Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13th, at Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading. 

Frances was born in Middletown, Ohio on November 24, 1925, the daughter of the late Ethel M. (Brown) and William E. Covault. She was the widow of Philip Malpas who died in 2014. They were married at Grace Episcopal Church, Sandusky, Ohio and enjoyed 62 years together.

She graduated from Muskingum College (Bachelor of Arts, 1949), and taught English and mathematics in Sandusky, OH and Louisville, KY. She was a member of the Episcopal Church (Christ Church or St Alban’s) since moving to Pennsylvania in 1968.

Frances will be remembered for her love of music, books, playing bridge with friends and her enjoyment of cooking, baking and entertaining friends and family. Everyone was welcome in her home.

Frances is survived by two daughters: Alison M., wife of Larry J. Whalen, of Sinking Spring; Phyllis B. Malpas, partner of Yvonne S. Caswell, of Kalamazoo, MI, and a son, Mark D. Malpas, husband of Phyllis M. Malpas, of Charleston, SC. Frances is also survived by 2 grandchildren: Emily B. Whalen, fiancee of A. J. Stuart, and James P. Whalen, husband of Jessica (Pitts) Whalen.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Compassionate Care Hospice and the many nurses and support personnel at the Reading Hospital and especially Phoebe Berks, Wernersville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Phoebe Berks Village, 1 Reading Drive, Wernersville, PA 19565. 

A Memorial Service will be held at Phoebe Berks Chapel at 11 AM on Friday, February 16th. The family will receive guests at a light reception following the service. Inurnment will be in St Alban’s Columbarium.
