Elmer L. Bitting
Retired Reading Police Detective
Elmer L. Bitting, formerly of Cortland Avenue Kenhorst, died Thursday, February 8, 2018 in Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton where he had been a patient for one day. He was admitted to the hospital from the Gino Merli Veteran's Center In Scranton where he resided since 2014.
Born in Stonetown, PA, he was the son of the late Averta E. (Knorr) and Arthur D. Bitting. He was previously married to Geraldine Distasio.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah A. wife of Glenn R. Fake, Sr., of Reading and a son, Michael A. Bitting and his wife Kathy (Franco) Bitting, of New Smynra Beach, Florida.
Other survivors include 3 grandchildren; Ryan M. Stephenson, Columbus, Ohio. Angela M. Owens New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Glenn R. Fake, Jr. Shillington, PA along with one great-granddaughter Harper Owens.
He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene F. Lapinski and a brother William Bitting.
Elmer=was enlisted in the U.S. Navy 1951-1955. His tour of duty included sailing the Mediterranean Sea on the USS Salem CA139 along with Italy, Monaco, Rock of Gibraltar, Spain and Turkey. After discharge he was employed by Doehler Jarvis Corp. He also worked as a carpenter building homes.
In 1960 he joined the Reading Department and was a patrolman, made detective after 2 years of service and spent a great deal of time in the Juvenile Division. He retired after 30 years of service in 1990. Elmer grew up in a home at Angelica Dam and his friends were all from the Millmont area with whom he spent his retirement years reminiscing the times of their youth and the beauty of what was Angelica Dam.
Interment is private at the convenience of the family.
