Helmut (Bones) Makosch, 78, of Leesport, PA, peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2022 after a brief battle against COVID-19.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette (Yarrish) Makosch; sons Christopher (Kim) of Wyomissing, PA, and Kenneth (Kelly) of Ithaca, NY; his grandchildren, who called him Opa, Eric, Lauren, Isabel, and Tessa; his sisters Dorothea Kozlowski and Rosemarie Yetzer; his brother Joachim Makosch; his beloved cat; and many friends.
Helmut and Jeanette celebrated 50 years of marriage on April 24, 2021.
Born in Gleiwitz, Germany, Helmut was the son of Erich and Theresia (Materla) Makosch. He immigrated to the United States when he was eight and spent his 45 year career in metal fabrication at Rockwell and Goss.
Helmut loved the outdoors. He was an avid walker, hunter, golfer, and tennis player. He was always there for his family. When his children were younger, he supported them in all of their activities, including volunteering as an Assistant Boy Scout Master and spending hours throwing football and baseball in the yard.
You could find Helmut walking his daily five miles, watching deer and birds, shopping for the best deal on bananas at Leesport Auction, cheering on the Eagles and Penn State, and listening to polka with friends at polka festivals. He loved to play cards – gin rummy with his wife at night and teaching his grandchildren blackjack.
Helmut was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania. As per Helmut’s wishes, he has been cremated and a Mass service is scheduled at St. Ignatius on Friday, March 11th at 10:30 am. Family and friends are invited to the church at 10am for visitation prior to Mass.
In lieu of flowers, please make gifts in memory of Helmut’s life to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
