George R. Freeman, 93, of Whitfield, passed away Friday, April 22nd, at Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Leesport, PA on October 8, 1928, he was a son of the late Anna S. (Luckenbill) and George S. Freeman. He was the widower of Marion R. (Zohn) who died in 1998.
A graduate of Reading High School and Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute, he was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church, and served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Korean War.
George was the Owner of the Warren Street Esso/Exxon Service Station and subsequently owned Reading Speedometer at the same location for a combined 45 years. His friends and customers referred to him as "honest George" and "The Clock Doctor"
He is survived by two daughters, Sheryl L., wife of James Althouse Jr., of Wernersville, PA and Brenda L., wife of Paul Austin, of Mohnton, PA. He was an active pop pop and was adored by his 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by a brother, Paul W. Freeman, of Casselberry, FL and a sister, Doris L. Whitehead, widow of Charles, of The Villages, FL and predeceased by a brother Franklin C. Freeman.
George was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time with family and friends fishing, raking clams, and crabbing at his shore home at Leisure Point Park, Rehoboth Beach, DE.
He was a founding member and past President of Lick Run Lodge of Coudersport, PA, a member of the Rain and Shine Travelers Club of Reading, and a Life Member of the VFW and the American Legion.
A 32nd Degree Mason, George was a 58 year member of Chandler Lodge 227 F&AM, the Tall Cedars, the Frolickers and Neversink Forest # 32 along with the Rajah Shrine.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday, May 7th from 9 - 10:30 AM at Feeney Funeral Home. A Masonic Service and a Memorial Service will be held at Charles Evans Cemetery Chapel at 11 AM. 1125 Centre Avenue in Reading, PA .Inurnment will be at Charles Evans Mausoleum with full military honors.
