Donald I. Helwig
Donald I. Helwig, 87, passed away peacefully at Country Meadows, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Born in Reading on August 6, 1937, Donald was the son of the late John and Hazel (Hurley) Helwig. He attended Reading High School. He worked at Pomeroy’s Department store for 34 years, leaving as head of their delivery department and later worked twelve years in the Reading School District. He had a work ethic second to none. He loved spending time with family, spreading his humor and sometimes “corny jokes”. He marveled at how fast his grandchildren were growing up, each time he saw them! He was always available to lend a helping hand. He will be missed.
Don hunted in his early adult years, but really enjoyed fishing. Deep sea fishing with friends, as well as salmon fishing. He was finally talked into to fishing for “more tame fish”, and he got “hooked” going to Canada, fishing the St Lawrence River, and more recently, Newboro Lakes region where he caught his share of bass and pike from our boat. He had a love for the Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Cardinals, but later came to appreciate the Phillies and Eagles. Don was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Reading and a life member of social clubs, the Northend Rod & Gun Club and the IVY Leaf Association.
Don is survived by son, Donald and his friend Lorrie, former daughter-in-law Jill and son David, former daughter-in-law Linda. Grandchildren Jessica and John, and Allison. Also surviving are brother-in-law Richard Mengel and his wife Elaine. Also there are nephews, Jeffrey and John and nieces Julie and Janine and their families.
Don was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (Mengel) Helwig in 2012 and his second wife, Beryl Helwig, in 2021. Also, his brother John and his wife Judy.
A special thank you to Dr Christiansen and his staff, Country Meadows staff, and Grane Hospice, for their excellent care.
