Sophia G. Nies, 78, of Reading, passed away Tuesday, February 3rd, at Berks Heim Nursing Home, Bern Township. Sophia was born in Reading on November 17, 1947, a daughter of the late Mary Lou (Hyneman) and George T. Malanios, Sr. She was the widow of Charles Nies who predeceased her in 2019. She was a 1965 graduate of Exeter High School and was employed as a Receptionist at Co-County Wellness (formerly Berks Aid Network), retiring in 2013. She was heavily involved in volunteering during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 90s and into the early 2000s. Along the way, she often opened her door, cooked meals, and gave friendship to those that needed it. She had also sewn several panels for the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Sophia loved to crochet, cross-stitch and paint ceramics. She made many gifts in her younger years for family and friends. Sophia is survived by a daughter, Adrianne, wife of Alex Norris, of Reading, a brother, Danny Malanios, of Exeter and was predeceased by a brother, George T. Malanios Jr. Sophia is also survived by three grandchildren, Allison, Abigail and Andrew Norris as well as nephews Christopher and Nathan and a niece, Diana.

Relative and friends are invited to call on Monday, February 9th from 10 to 11 AM at Feeney Funeral Home. Religious service will follow at 11 AM. Interment at Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter.
