Mary M. (O'Kane) Uhrig Obituary

A Devout Catholic

On Sunday June 18, on the Catholic Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, Mary Uhrig, 95, entered into Eternal Rest in her Reading home surrounded by her loving children and their families.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on August 19, 1921, she was a daughter of James and Katherine (Cullen) O'Kane.  Mary married Adolph Uhrig on Septemeber 7, 1946 and together celebrated 61 years of marriage.

She was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary of the Assumption High School in Elizabeth.  Reentering the workforce after her youngest was in school, she was employed by Reading Model Cities but retired from Berks County Children and Youth Services after 18 years of service.

Her appreciation for Shakespeare led her to Alvernia College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/Communication in 2003 at the age of 82, receiving special recognition for being the oldest graduate ever of Alvernia.

Surviving are four sons, Reverend Greg Uhrig of the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey, Joseph (Susan) Uhrig of Shillington, Timothy (Beverly) Uhrig of Pottstown, Jonathan Uhrig of Chicago, Illinois and five daughters, Mary Martha, Reading, Rose Anne, Mount Penn, Ellen Louise Bricker, Exeter Tounship, Thersa Marie (Richard) Kurkiewicz, Thiensville, Wisconsin and Lisa Jayne (Ronald) Shepard of Falls Church, Virginia.  There are 5 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren with a third expected in July and many nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her brother Bernard (Theresa) O'Kane of Elizabeth.

Mary was an avid world traveler and enjoyed playing Bridge, watching Lawrence Welk every Saturday night and being with Adolph and the kids, but she loved her Catholic faith and the Eucharist.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Adolph (2007), two sons William (1952), Adrian (1975) and a grandson Keith (1998).

Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 20, 2017 between 7 and 9 PM  at the John P. Feeney Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by her son Greg at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 322 South 5th St. Reading Wednesday at 10 AM. Internment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Peter's at the above address.
