Janet was born in Herkimer, New York on April 6,1939 to parents Starr and Inez (Crocker) Cole, she grew up within a family as one of four rambunctious siblings. Her remarkable energy and determination allowed her to enjoy many activities, artistic endeavors, and hobbies throughout her life. Coming from a historically musical family with grandparents who were Vaudeville musicians, Janet loved music and played the clarinet for more than 80 years. Starting the clarinet at the age of four, she grew up participating in bands and orchestras led by her school music director father as a child and later joined local bands once she graduated from college. She was a talented seamstress who learned to sew and made all her clothes by the age of 8 years old and later made everything from clothes to home décor. A fierce competitor, she was an athlete, playing field hockey and basketball in high school which became an early indicator of her energy and desire to lead an active life. She attended and graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Early Childhood Education.
Before having her own children, she was a gifted first grade teacher who loved small children and worked for the Mt. Pleasant school district in Wilmington, DE. With an adventurous spirit, she spent summers in Europe where she had the opportunity to travel as an early participant with the School for International Living in Vermont and lived with a family in Denmark. She met the love of her life, husband Carl at the Wilmington Ski Club and married him in Wilmington, DE in 1965 after which, she joyfully persevered in raising and reading to her oldest daughter and surprise fraternal twins. She became a real-estate agent in 1986 working for Fox & Roach for 13 years before retiring. Married for over 57 years together, she and her husband Carl enjoyed working on home projects, playing music, ballroom dancing, skiing, tennis, kayaking locally at Marsh Creek, gardening, and gathering friends and her much loved family together to have fun. They were active members within their church, the Church of the Holy Trinity and their residential community of Dilworthtown Oaks in West Chester, PA for 37 years before moving to the Tel Hai Retirement Community where they have happily resided for the past 8 years.
Always keeping her active inner kid alive with a twinkle in her eye, she was a loving, caring, humorous and creative wife, mom, family member, neighbor, and friend. She loved her pets and people, and within her community at Tel Hai, she was known for her love of walking outside, her social nature, concern for others and interest in making her neighbors and friends laugh and smile. She was often seen at Tel Hai events enthusiastically performing music as part of the “C&C Duo” on the clarinet accompanied by her husband on the guitar.
