Gerry H. Boyer Obituary

Gerry H. Boyer READING Gerry Hossler Boyer, 77, an educator and family therapist, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014, in the Reading Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Lancaster County, she grew up on a farm near Annville, Lebanon County. She graduated from Cornwall High School in 1954 and won a scholarship that enabled her to attend the Reading Hospital School of Nursing. She later earned degrees in nursing from Millersville University and Penn State, and a certificate in marriage and family therapy from the University of Pennsylvania. She was certified by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She married her high school sweetheart, James, and traveled to Georgia and to Germany with him when he was called to military service. She taught nursing at Albright College and Penn State's Hershey Medical Center, and in 1982, after training at Penn, opened a practice in couples and family therapy, serving clients for more than 20 years in Flying Hills and in West Reading, where she founded the Counseling and Learning Center and practiced with other therapists. With her husband, James, she taught a seminar called "Remaining Vital" designed to help seniors stay active and connected in retirement. As she retired from active practice, she completed master gardener training and became a passionate home gardener. She was an avid and fearless traveler. In her 50s, she went on an "Outward Bound" trip on a wooden sailboat. She is survived by her husband, James; three children, Tom, Larry, and Susan; two sisters, Mary Jane Smith and Helen Sweigart; two brothers, Don Hossler and Lee Hossler; and seven grandchildren, Allison, Madeline, Sam, Aidan, Anna, Ella, and Leo. A celebration of Gerry Boyer's life will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Joanna Furnace, located off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown, PA 19543. Gifts in Gerry's honor may be sent to Opportunity House, 430 N. 2nd St., Reading PA 19601. Special thanks to the staff of Reading Hospital ICU and N2 West for outstanding and compassionate care. Arrangements entrusted to the John P. Feeney Funeral Home in Reading's Centre Park Historic District, 625 N. 4th St. at Centre Ave., Reading 19601.
